Dear All,
I had a spar break at the join; 14mm o.d. using a 10mm internal sleeve, all Carbon.
Following a 'heavy landing'. one of the joins is now broken. I got out the tail end with long nosed pliers.

My question is this: is there any way more effective than drilling to get out the broken bit that is currently glued in there, so I can replace the damaged piece?

Your help and guidance are, as ever. greatly appreciatded.

If the joint had been glued with SuperGlue (most are) you could try soaking the end of the rod in acetone to dissolve the glue. After a while, you may be able to pull the broken piece out.
That has worked about half of the time for me, and always takes at least an hour. I usually just drill the old piece out.

For lack of better words, CA (superglue) has a low 'shear' point. What I mean is that when a sudden sharp force is applied, it will break the bond.

You didn't say how long the 14mm rod was, but if the ID is 10mm, get a 9mm (or 1/2") piece of rod, pipe, or something stiff (and longer than the tube). Feed it through the open end of the tube, and then with sharp, forcefull blows on the end, you can knock the internal ferrule out.

Been there, done than. Haven't gotten the t-shirt yet...

Besides soaking the broken end in the acetone, you could pour a little acetone into the open end and attack the glue from 'both' ends.

If it was epoxied in you will have to drill it out or break it into little bits.

I have used acetone on CA and the shock loading techinques with good results.

I have a can of acetone just for this purpose... I set the end of the spar in the can and leave it. check it about every 15 minutes or however long I can stand to see it on the workbench...

I'd use a lighter or heatgun to soften the glue and push it out with a rod. Warm it evenly until it's too hot to grip with your fingers. Won't work for CA but seems to work for polyurethane, epoxy and PSA adhesives.
