Originally designed to provide a super strong nock for big sticks, strong enough to keep the end of the stick from being crushed. Great example would be the bottom of the vertical stick on a Rokkaku.

Customer requests caused the creation of these internal nocks for smaller diameter spars for the same reasoning.
